Even if plants do not die to the ground in winter, they usually grow more vigorously, produce superior flowers and maintain a better shape if cut to the ground in late winter each year. Removal of spent flower spikes during the growing season will encourage additional bloom, but consider leaving final blooms in place to facilitate reseeding.

Butterfly Blue is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 12 inches and a spread of 12-18 inches. It is also disease resistant. Scabiosa Butterfly Blue was name Perennial Plant of the Year in 2000, and one can see why. It will do excellent for front-of-the-border areas, with Coreopsis Moonbeam, Dianthus Bath's Pink, in mass plantings or as cut flowers.
